KATHMANDU TOP

The largest of the three royal cities in the valley and capitol of Nepal, Kathmandu has existed in some form since its founding in 723 AD.  Its name comes from a historically important pagoda named Kasthamandap, which literally means “wood covered shelter.”  According to legend, this three-tiered pagoda was built entirely from one massive tree and contains no iron nails or supports. Kasthamandap was one of many structures that collapsed during the earthquake in April 2015. Restoration of this famous pagoda has yet to begin. Other notable temples include Swayambhunath, “Monkey Temple,” Boudhanath, housing the largest Buddhist Stupa on earth, and Pashupatinath, a Hindu temple at which funeral pyres continuously fill the sky with smoke and the river Bagmati with ash.
